The conflict, between the Bolshevik Red Army and the counter-revolutionary White Russians, began after the Russian Revolution in 1917. Despite intervention by the Allies on behalf of the White forces, the Bolsheviks' ultimate victory in 1920 led to the establishment of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics in 1922.
